Gather Your Groomsmen For Tuxedo Fittings PDF Print E-mail

Making sure your groomsmen and best man look great on your wedding day has a lot to do with proper fitting tuxedos and coordinating shoes. Ill-fitting suits or scuffed shoes on one of your groomsmen will really take away from the wedding, so set some expectations for your wedding party when it comes to tuxedo fittings and rentals.

Don't let your friends guess at their measurements or measure themselves. You need a professional to do measurements correctly, and suits often need to be tailored to fit each groomsman. Three to five months before the wedding is a good time to take your groomsmen for the first fitting. You'll need to make an appointment at the rental shop, so choose a time that works for all your groomsmen.

If you wait until the last minute, you run the risk of the style you want being unavailable, or problems scheduling a time for a fitting that everyone can agree on. Also, prices can vary a lot between seasons so you can save money by renting your tuxedos well in advance.

The first fitting is only about five minutes long. The tailor just takes measurements and the groomsmen try on the suit style the groom has chosen. He or she will measure you neck and sleeve size, as well as the size of your waist and out-seam for your pants. Finally, an arm and chest measurement are taken for the jacket. The final fitting is done a few days before the wedding and allows for last minute alterations.

Ask the store what is included with the tuxedo rental. A rental comes with a jacket, vest pants, a tie, shoes, and sometimes socks (which they don't usually want back)! Often, cufflinks and studs are part of the package. Stores vary on what is included and what costs extra, so find out and avoid an expensive surprise when you pick them up.

Since the groomsmen most often pay for the tuxedo rental themselves, it is fine if someone wants to save a few bucks by providing his own shoes or cufflinks. Just ensure that he's thinking of using a pair of shoes that fit with the other groomsmen's footwear, or that are in good shape.

You'll need to return the tuxes the day after the wedding, so make a list of everything that's included and check things off as each groomsmen returns the tux to you. The tuxedo rental store will charge you a fee if there is a missing vest or shoe, so check you have every piece back before you head for the rental shop. The same goes for late returns, or damaged tuxes that need to be replaced. A spilled glass of wine or cigar-smelling shirt isn't going to cost you, so don't worry.

The most important thing about the tuxedo rental is the fittings. Don't take no for answer – make sure every single groomsmen is there to get measured, and everyone will look fantastic on your wedding day.
